eLearning Instructional Designer

I make learning feel less like homework. Training should be something people want to do — not something they endure.

Problems Worth Solving
The question I always start with: who are your learners and what do they need to do?

Learning design with purpose & personality.

As an eLearning designer with a learner-focused, skills-based approach, I’m always asking the same question: “Who are your learners, and what do they need to be able to do?”

I create experiences rather than lessons. Using simulations, branching scenarios, video, and microlearning, I design learning that sticks. My background spans instructor-led training, web development, adult learning theory, and both technical and journalistic writing — a mix that lets me bring unique skills and talents to every project.

I’m currently at the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families, where I design learning that supports some of the most important work in the state. Before that, I spent time at UCare as a Training and Testing Coordinator where I helped shape training programs from the ground up.

Outside of the day-to-day, you’ll likely find me exploring the world or digging into the history of a storied distillery. I have a deep appreciation for whiskey — particularly the heritage of the craft and the unique stories behind every bottle. Whether it’s trekking through a new country or refining my palate, I find that the best insights often come when I’m far away from a computer screen.

How I think about design.

01
Performance First
Every project starts with the same question: what do learners need to be able to do? Not what do they need to know — what do they need to do. That distinction changes everything about how a course gets built.
02
Experience Over Content
The goal is always to create an experience — something a learner has to engage with, respond to, and navigate. That's what makes it stick.
03
Accessible by Default
WCAG 2.1 AA isn't a checklist item at the end of a project — it's a design feature from the start. Every learner deserves the same experience, and that means building inclusion in from day one.

The Escape Room Assessment
Replaced a traditional end-of-course assessment for a software simulation training with a fully interactive escape room. Learners apply their skills under pressure to solve challenges and "escape" — rather than just clicking through a quiz.
🎮 Transformed a forgettable assessment into an experience learners actually talked about.
🔧 Built a companion tool to make this approach reusable — see the Storyline Random Code Generator.

Storyline Random Code Generator
A web-based tool for eLearning designers and developers building escape room-style experiences in Storyline. Select which date and time components to include, drag to reorder how they combine, optionally split into individual digits for lock-style combinations, then copy the generated JavaScript straight into a Storyline Execute JavaScript trigger — no coding knowledge required.
⚙️ Turns a complex custom coding task into a four-step process any designer can follow — and makes every learner's experience unique.

SSIS Time Entry Web App
To support a statewide digital transformation, I developed an end-to-end multimedia training solution for a new web-based time reporting tool. This project focused on translating complex system updates into a user-centric, "anytime, anywhere" performance support asset for experienced social service workers.
📱 Modernized the Learning Path: Transformed a technical software rollout into an engaging, benefit-driven narrative that prioritized mobile accessibility and field-worker efficiency.
🎙️ Leveraged Cutting-Edge Tools: Managed the full production cycle using Camtasia for high-quality screen captures and Storyline 360's AI voice synthesis for professional, iterative narration.
